How to Care for Your Scalp Tattoo Post-Procedure
Find out the best practices for maintaining and protecting your scalp micropigmentation results.
Your scalp tattoo is more than a cosmetic treatment—it’s an investment in your confidence. And just like any investment, proper care makes all the difference. Whether this is your first session or a touch-up, following a clear scalp aftercare routine ensures optimal healing and long-lasting results.
At Lasting Impressions SMP, we guide every client through the full process—but here’s a refresher on how to protect your new look during the tattoo healing phase and beyond.
The First 3 Days: Do Nothing—That’s the Point
This is the most important phase of healing. Your scalp needs time to seal and recover.
Do:
Keep your scalp completely dry
Avoid touching, rubbing, or scratching
Stay indoors or wear a breathable hat to avoid sun exposure
Avoid:
Sweating, steam, or hot showers
Shampoo, oils, or topical products
Intense physical activity
These first 72 hours set the tone for pigment retention and skin recovery.
Day 4–7: Begin Gentle Cleaning & Moisture
After 3 full days, you can begin light scalp maintenance to support healing.
Do:
Gently rinse with lukewarm water
Use a fragrance-free, gentle cleanser
Pat dry with a clean towel
Apply a thin layer of unscented moisturizer once or twice a day
Avoid:
Harsh cleansers or exfoliants
Sweating, swimming, or sauna use
Shaving your scalp or using clippers
Keep it simple—less is more during this stage of tattoo healing.
Days 8–10: Let It Settle
Scabs and flaking (if any) should naturally fall away. Don’t pick, scratch, or exfoliate. Your skin is regenerating and sealing in the pigment.
If itching occurs, apply a very light layer of approved moisturizer—but continue avoiding the sun, sweating, and harsh products until 10 full days have passed.
Long-Term Scalp Maintenance Tips
Once healed, the best way to preserve your SMP results is through smart scalp maintenance:
Maintain with:
Daily SPF (hat or sunscreen)
Regular moisturizing
Avoiding abrasive products
Staying hydrated and healthy
Most clients return for a touch-up every 3–5 years—but great aftercare can extend that even longer.
Final Thoughts:
Proper aftercare isn’t optional—it’s part of the process. Follow these steps and your SMP will heal beautifully, retain pigment, and look sharp for years to come.
